Merton Council has begun construction of new council homes on Farm Road in Morden, marking the first such development in a generation.
This project is part of a broader effort to increase affordable housing in Merton, a key priority for local residents and businesses. The Deputy Mayor of London for Housing, Tom Copley, joined local council leaders at the groundbreaking event.
By 2027, the council aims to complete 75 new homes across three locations: Farm Road, Elm Nursery, and Raleigh Gardens. These homes will be energy-efficient, helping residents reduce utility bills, and strategically located near shops and services to support local businesses.
The development is backed by a significant investment from the Mayor of London’s Affordable Homes programme 2021-2026, reflecting a joint commitment to expedite the delivery of housing. The Farm Road site will feature 18 new homes, including one and two-bedroom apartments and larger family houses. The council plans to continue building and managing additional homes to benefit local residents.
Tom Copley emphasised the importance of delivering homes of all tenures and expressed eagerness to see the project progress. Merton Council Leader Ross Garrod highlighted the significance of providing quality housing and the positive impact on the community.
The initiative aims to address the local housing crisis and improve residents’ quality of life. For further details, the council directs interested parties to their program on building new council homes.
