Commuters using Alperton Underground Station are set for a transformative upgrade, with Brent Council announcing a crucial £5 million funding injection towards full step-free access and other vital improvements.
This significant commitment, leveraging the Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL), will be matched by Transport for London (TfL), unlocking a comprehensive station overhaul anticipated to be completed by Summer 2027.
The decision, confirmed at the Cabinet meeting on May 19 2025, marks a significant victory for accessibility and urban regeneration in Brent. Alperton Station, which serves over three million passengers annually, currently lacks step-free access and suffers from congestion at peak times and outdated facilities.
The approved plans will install new lifts, increase ticket gates to ease overcrowding, and provide upgraded, fully accessible toilet facilities, including baby-changing amenities. TfL’s concept designs promise to respect the station’s historic character while delivering modern, inclusive infrastructure.
Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning & Property Councillor Teo Benea, cabinet member for regeneration, planning & property, said: “This is fantastic news for Alperton residents and all who use the station. For too long, Alperton Station has presented significant barriers for those with mobility issues, parents with buggies, and the elderly. Our £5 million investment, alongside TfL’s commitment, will deliver a truly accessible station, a cornerstone of our wider efforts to ensure Alperton’s growth benefits everyone.”
The project aligns with Brent Council’s strategic priorities, including fostering prosperity, promoting a cleaner environment, and building a healthier Brent. Enhancing public transport accessibility is crucial for supporting local businesses, encouraging sustainable travel, and creating a more equitable borough.
Tfl’s detailed design will begin immediately, and construction is anticipated to commence in Summer 2026. The station is expected to remain open throughout the construction period, minimising disruption for passengers.
