Councillors have approved plans for a Safestore unit to replace an industrial estate in Woking.
Woking Borough Council’s planning committee approved Safestore’s plan to replace Goldsworth Road Industrial Estate with its plans for a 2,404 sq m development at its January 13 meeting.
Two years ago the council approved its own plans for 12 light industrial units on the site, which it owns, but the new scheme has proven more popular with nearby residents.
Matt Guest from Safestore told the meeting: “This application has met with exceptional support from the community who submitted 21 supporting comments to the council for our scheme.
“We were particularly pleased to see the joint letter of support by 44 Mabel St residents as a result of our collaboration with residents and officers.
“This is a high-quality, low-intensity development that regenerates a longstanding brownfield site. Safe storage use generates very low traffic, operates within limited hours and has minimal plant, making it far more compatible with neighbouring uses and previous proposals for the site.”
