The regeneration of Wandsworth’s Alton estate is advancing with plans for new affordable homes and community facilities.

The proposal, submitted by Wandsworth Council, focuses on transforming the site of long-derelict buildings into a modern community hub. This development, known as ‘Block A’, is located at the entrance to the estate on Danebury Avenue.

It will replace a former Co-op building and adjacent youth club with a purpose-built facility that includes a library, youth space, council offices, community space, and a replacement GP practice. Additionally, 55 new council homes will be constructed.

The project is a significant milestone in the Alton Renewal Plan, which aims to enhance community facilities and public spaces while providing genuinely affordable homes. The existing structures will be demolished to make way for a four-storey community hub and a separate nine-storey residential building. The new library will feature IT and study spaces, bookable rooms, and youth facilities. The residential building will meet modern space and accessibility standards, and will be surrounded by improved public areas.

Public realm improvements include more trees, a new play space, and safer routes along Danebury Avenue and Holybourne Avenue. The plan also outlines future flexible use for the current Roehampton Library site. Residents can view and comment on the proposals online using planning reference 2025/4614.

In response to residents’ requests, the council will install wayfinding signage, artwork, and creative lighting around the estate. New landscaped play spaces will open at Alton Activity Centre and Downshire Field by summer.

Aydin Dikerdem, cabinet member for housing, stated, “We promised we’d hit these timelines and we have. These plans for Alton’s Block A clearly show residents that we have listened to what they want for their estate and that we’re acting at pace on what we heard.”
