The Environment Agency, Guildford Borough Council, and Surrey County Council collaborated on a sustainable flood risk management scheme for Guildford town centre.

The initiative aimed to reduce flood risk, enhance environmental outcomes, and improve connections between the town centre and the River Wey. Residents were encouraged to share their views via an online survey, open until 28 February 2026, which could influence the scheme’s detailed design.

In January 2026, public events were held to present the scheme’s designs. These included two information afternoons on 17 January at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and 22 January at the Guildford Borough Council offices. An online presentation took place on 20 January via Microsoft Teams.

Attendees viewed new artists’ impressions and outline designs aimed at reducing flood risk.

Jon Mansbridge, the Environment Agency project director, expressed excitement about the community engagement, highlighting the project’s potential to reduce flood risk and support town centre regeneration.

Cllr Julia McShane emphasized the importance of the scheme in protecting homes and businesses from flooding. For more information, residents were directed to the Guildford Flood Alleviation Scheme website and encouraged to follow updates on social media. Feedback and questions could be sent via email, and residents were advised to sign up for flood warnings through GOV.uk.
