Hammersmith and Fulham has approved plans to extend Matrix Studios at 91A Peterborough Road, a long-established creative workspace known for its musical heritage and links to artists including The Police, The Clash and Oasis.

The scheme, brought forward by Mr Rupert Stanley of Matrix Masion Rouge Ltd, will deliver a substantial expansion of the existing studio complex through the erection of two additional roof-level floors, along with ground and first-floor extensions, new solar panels, rooflights, and changes to the external facades including new doors and windows.

The approved development will create 1,229 sqm of new Class E(g)(i) floorspace, supporting continued use of the site for employment and creative industries. The Matrix Studios complex currently accommodates more than 50 businesses, including recording studios, digital media production, publishing, and artist management uses.

The council considered the proposal an opportunity to strengthen this established economic hub while retaining its role as a culturally significant destination in Southwest London.

Planning officers concluded that the proposal would provide a sustainable form of development by making better use of previously developed land and enhancing an existing employment site. The design was judged to be high quality and visually acceptable, with no harmful impact on the character or significance of nearby heritage assets. In particular, the scheme was found to preserve the Hurlingham and Studdridge Street conservation areas, as well as the setting of the nearby Grade II listed former Peterborough School and caretaker’s cottage.

The site’s context, including its back land location, proximity to residential properties and the Marie D’Orliac Fulham Bilingual School, was assessed alongside constraints such as flood risk, controlled parking, and noise sensitivity.

Overall, the council found that the benefits of additional employment space, heritage-led regeneration, and design quality outweighed any adverse effects, leading to approval.
