The Oxford Covered Market has worked on a programme of essential improvements, and will remain open throughout works if the proposals are successful.

The masterplan for the improvements was approved in 2023, and last year over £8 million was allocated to improvements.

The key improvements are:

  • Upgrades to power and drainage
  • A new communal space opening onto Market Street
  • Improved lighting and signage
  • Improved public and trader facilities
  • Additional retail space
  • Improved entrances

The market would remain open during the works, which are expected to take approximately two years, though there may be diversions and entrance closures during the process.

The consultation was opened on 9 June, and will run until 26 June, with Oxford City Council inviting residents and businesses to comment their thoughts on the proposals, you can find the consultation here.
