A planning application seeking the demolition of existing student accommodation, and the erection of new purpose-built student accommodation will be heard at today’s Cambridge City Council Planning Committee meeting.
The existing site is comprised of a 147-bedroom quadrant-shaped accommodation at Wolfson Court, Clarkson Road, and the applicant – St John’s College, Cambridge – seeks to replace this with a building comprising 408 student rooms.
The applicant is also seeking permission for new landscaping and infrastructure features for the development, alongside installation of a temporary construction access onto Madingley Road.
Recommendation
The proposal is currently being recommended for approval subject to conditions, and delegated powers for the completion of a Section 106 Agreement.
Reasons for the recommendations include the view that the use of an established site for a development with the same use is acceptable, the new buildings being an upgrade on the previous ones, alongside their high sustainability standards, and the developments landscape-led approach which is sensitive to the West Cambridge Conservation Area – upon which the site is situated upon.
