Richmond Council is urging residents to attend a Community Conversation event and share their views on the government’s Heathrow expansion plans, as the Council reiterates its strong opposition to a third runway and any increase in noise, pollution or disruption to local life.

The event, taking place on Thursday 23 July, will allow residents to discuss the latest government consultation, known as the Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement (HENPS), and ask questions about how the proposals could affect their homes, health and quality of life. The meeting will be held at York House, Twickenham, and online.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, leader of Richmond Council, said a third runway would be a major setback for the borough, bringing more aircraft overhead, worse air quality, higher carbon emissions and added pressure on communities already affected by Heathrow’s operations. He argued that London needs “a better Heathrow, not a bigger one.”

The Council also criticised the timing of the consultation, which runs through the summer holiday period and until 1 September, saying this limits public participation and makes it harder for communities to properly scrutinise the plans. Residents are encouraged to use both the event and the public consultation to make their views known.

Richmond Council said it will include residents’ feedback in its formal response and continue working with neighbouring boroughs, MPs and community groups to oppose measures that would worsen the airport’s impact. The Council has long campaigned for stronger protections on aircraft noise, air quality and night flights.
