Council leaders from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are calling on the government’s new Secretary of State to make an early decision on LGR proposals for the area.
Last week, the government announced decisions on LGR proposals for 14 areas across the country.
While the four options submitted by councils in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough were considered, it was decided more time was needed to reach a decision, which is also the verdict for West Sussex, the only other region to have a deferred decision.
During a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government this week, council leaders from the seven councils within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough reiterated the importance of securing a decision as early as possible.
While the government has indicated that a decision will be made by October, council leaders posed that an earlier decision would provide greater certainty and help meet the demanding timetable for establishing new councils.
This week, leaders and chief executives from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough councils were informed by government officials that the information submitted in support of all four proposals was comprehensive, with no additional evidence required.

Cllr Shabina Qayyum, leader of Peterborough City Council, said: “It is disappointing to learn that the Government requires more time to make a decision on Local Government Reorganisation for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
“However, it is important that the Government has all the information it needs to be able to decide on what is the biggest shake-up of local government for a generation and will impact residents of our city.
“Option D remains our preferred option as it will ensure that our identity and significance as a rapidly growing city is protected and preserved, giving us a stronger, clearer, local voice.
“Our seven councils have worked side by side to prepare for this significant change – and that collaboration will continue.”
