Hounslow Council, in partnership with Build The Way, is supporting young people to explore an alternative route into architecture and design.

The Council is funding places for two young people aged 18 to 25, including college leavers, to join the Build The Way Traineeship programme for nine months. Trainees will gain real-world experience at leading architecture practices in central London while working towards a Level 3 qualification in architecture.

To help improve young people’s chances of being selected for the programme, Work Hounslow employment advisors have provided careers advice and guidance to local applicants. This includes support with video and written applications, building confidence and interview preparation.

Grace Austen-Reed (pictured, second left), from the borough, attended the programme after completing her A-levels last year. She said:

“I’ve always been interested in architecture, particularly set design. Through working at shedkm and my studies, I’ve learned to use different design software. During study sessions at the London School of Architecture, I worked with other trainees in drawings and projects. I’ve also developed stronger interpersonal skills, and I am now more confident.”

Councillor Tom Bruce, deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration and economic development at Hounslow Council, said:

“Good jobs start with good opportunities. This partnership with Build The Way will help young people in Hounslow gain the skills, experience and confidence they need to begin a career in architecture and design. By working with leading employers, we are helping local people develop the skills they need for rewarding careers and making sure more young residents can take advantage of the opportunities available to them.”

Councillor Madeeha Asim, cabinet member for children and young futures, said:

“Access to good work and training opportunities is vital for young people to grow and thrive. This is particularly important for those who face barriers to accessing careers information and support. I hope this traineeship programme can unlock the creative potential of our young people, offering them a first step towards a meaningful career in building and design.”
