Wiltshire Council is beginning to develop plans for a package of transport improvements in Westbury, including a new bridge at Mane Way, improvements to Amazon Way and future changes to Oldfield Road.

The project is at an early stage, with designs still being developed, no final decisions have been made as of yet.

The project is intended to improve connections across the railway line and is being designed to accommodate vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

Proposals for the Mane Way Bridge are expected to be brought forward through a planning application in early 2027, subject to further design work. Alongside the bridge, the council is beginning to explore options for improvements to Oldfield Road and Amazon Way, as future bridge and rail crossing arrangements are likely to influence traffic movements across the area.

Rather than simply resurfacing Oldfield Road, the council will be looking at a range of options to address issues previously identified by residents and stakeholders. This could include measures to improve traffic flow and a review of existing traffic calming features, alongside other highway improvements.

On Amazon Way, work has begun to understand how the bridge proposal could affect the surrounding road network. This may include changes to parking arrangements, measures to discourage commuter parking in residential areas, and potential traffic management improvements.

The council has already begun discussions with Westbury Town Council and intends to continue engaging with the community and other stakeholders as proposals develop. Once options have been prepared, residents and local organisations will have opportunities to comment on the emerging designs before any plans are finalised.

The proposed programme would see the Mane Way Bridge progressed first, subject to planning approval, detailed design, procurement and construction.

The council expects any Amazon Way measures to be developed during this period, with more substantial Oldfield Road improvements following once the bridge is operational. This phased approach would allow the council to better understand how traffic is using the network before progressing further interventions.

Comments

David Bullock, director of highways and transport, said: “These proposals are still at an early stage and we are committed to working closely with local residents, Westbury Town Council and other stakeholders as the designs develop.

“The Mane Way Bridge has the potential to improve connectivity across Westbury and support future transport improvements in the area, but there is still a significant amount of work to do before any final decisions are made.

“We want residents to help shape these proposals and ensure any future improvements reflect the needs of the local community.”
