​The potential opening of an Aldi in Hanworth, Richmond, is generating considerable interest, particularly as the site is currently listed in the draft Local Plan as a potential location for redevelopment.

This plan identifies the existing Homebase site as a possible venue for a new retail development, with Aldi being a strong contender. However, this proposal is still under consideration and subject to planning applications and approvals. The Local Plan is undergoing examination and public consultation, which will ultimately determine the site’s future.

Aldi’s interest in Hanworth aligns with its broader strategy to expand its presence in London. The popular discount supermarket chain is actively seeking suitable sites across various London boroughs to accommodate their standard store format, which typically requires a space of around 20,000 to 30,000 square feet. Additionally, Aldi prioritises locations with ample parking facilities, ideally offering around 100 parking spaces to cater to customer needs.

Accessibility is a key consideration for Aldi, as they aim to ensure their stores are conveniently located for both pedestrians and drivers. Therefore, they focus on areas with good transport links and high footfall to maximise customer reach. Aldi is also open to considering both freehold and leasehold opportunities, demonstrating flexibility in their approach to securing the right locations.

Furthermore, Aldi is committed to sustainable development and is keen to incorporate eco-friendly features into their new stores. This includes energy-efficient lighting, refrigeration systems, and the use of sustainable building materials. By expanding into Hanworth, Aldi aims to provide more consumers with access to their affordable, high-quality products, while also contributing positively to the local economy through job creation and community engagement.

Other potential locations for Aldi’s expansion include Chiswick, South Ealing, Rickmansworth, Notting Hill, Kensington, Barnet, Chessington, and Twickenham.
