A plan for a new market square in the centre of Reading looks set to go ahead.
Reading Borough Council’s planning applications committee will consider plans by Thackeray Estates for a radical new market square for independent retailers, start-ups and pop-up eateries at 1-15 Queen Victoria Street and 147-148 Friar Street, at its meeting on Wednesday, June 23. Officers have recommended approval.
The development will deliver a courtyard for independent operators with an apart-hotel created on the floors above.
Under the proposals, buildings which have been added over the years will make way for the new courtyard area which will be used for events such as outdoor cinema screenings and farmers’ markets. Listed buildings will be restored and new sections added.
It will open up space that had previously had no public access.
There will be entrances in both Queen Victoria Street and Friar Street.
