Berkeley Homes has completed the acquisition of the Queensmere and Observatory shopping centres in Slough.

The housebuilder is now reviewing the existing proposals for the consented residential-led, mixed use scheme for the town centre which British Land had pursued on behalf of the site’s previous owner Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA).

The existing consent for the 9.2-acre site includes 1,600 homes alongside new retail, leisure and entertainment spaces.

Berkeley plans to consult the community and share outline timescales for the redevelopment of the site in the Autumn.

Elkie Russell, managing director of Berkeley Homes Oxford & Chiltern, said: “This is a pivotal moment for Slough and Berkeley Homes. We’re delighted to have completed the acquisition of this landmark site, allowing us to accelerate our plans to reimagine and revitalise the high street.

“Building on the success of our transformation of the Horlicks Factory site, we are excited to deliver a new chapter for Slough that reflects the energy, ambition and diversity of its community.”

Cllr Dexter Smith, leader of the Slough Borough Council, said: “This is a hugely positive step forward for Slough. The agreement with Berkeley Homes marks a turning point in our ambition to revitalise the town centre.

“With their proven track record, including the successful transformation of the Horlicks Factory, we are confident they will breathe new life into the high street. This regeneration will deliver much-needed homes, improved public spaces, and a more vibrant street scene – all aligned with our vision for a thriving, connected, and sustainable Slough”.

Berkeley said there are no immediate plans for the Observatory and the development will initially focus on the Queensmere.
