The Mushkil Aasaan charity, located on North Drive in Tooting, has received approval from the Wandsworth Council planning committee to expand its facilities by adding sheltered accommodation units.
This development is a significant step in addressing the unmet need for specialised supported housing for the community’s elders.
The approved project involves the construction of six sheltered accommodation units, classified under Use Class C2. These units will be situated at the rear of the existing building and will include four one-bedroom units for single occupants and two one-bedroom units designed for two people. The development will also feature landscaping improvements, alterations to existing outbuildings, and the creation of cycle and refuse storage areas. These enhancements aim to blend seamlessly with the site’s existing features, including its mature trees and green spaces.
The site, a listed building within the Furzedown conservation area, is characterised by its Neo-Georgian architectural style, dating back to around 1934. Originally a single dwelling, the building has been converted into eight self-contained flats, generating rental income that supports the charity’s financial obligations. The property is surrounded by a lush garden, which serves as a community and children’s play area managed by the Transition Town Tooting Community Garden.
Located on the south side of North Drive, the site spans approximately 0.27 hectares and is part of the Streatham Park Conservation Area. It faces Tooting Bec Common, a locally listed open green space. It is neighboured by residential properties, including a Grade II* listed building at No.8 North Drive and a Grade II listed building at No.2 West Drive. The site benefits from vehicular access via North Drive and includes a forecourt parking area.
The development aligns with the charity’s ongoing plans to provide much-needed housing solutions for the elderly, a demand frequently voiced by the community. By enhancing its facilities, Mushkil Aasaan aims to offer a supportive environment for its residents while preserving the site’s historical and ecological significance. This project addresses housing needs and contributes to the community’s social and environmental well-being, ensuring that the charity continues to serve as a vital resource for Tooting’s residents.
