A key stage in making a £65 million project around Peterborough station become reality goes before councillors on Tuesday.
Peterborough City Council’s cabinet is set to agree to submit the full business case for the project to the Department for Transport (DfT) at the March 11 meeting in a bid to secure Levelling Up funding of £47.85m.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority secured the funding in March 2023, subject to full business case approval from the Dft. An outline business case was approved by the council a year ago.
Councillors are also expected to authorise the expenditure of a Towns Fund grant of £1.45m relating to the Citylink Peterborough Station Quarter works package.
Citylink is the first phase of the works which will involve removing an underpass at the Queensgate roundabout by raising the ground level to form a clear route to the city centre.
The balance of funding for the project is expected from private investment.
Key components of the project are:
- A new western station entrance and a multi-storey car park, creating quicker access to the station from the west
- A new station square to improve the arrival experience and create a better interchange between public transport and active travel modes
- A refurbished eastern station building
- An improved route from the station to the city centre
- Defined plots for future development opportunities
Once funding is secured the council hopes to start in the Summer.
