Ealing Council will consider a proposal next week for a temporary 1,200-seat theatre in Walpole Park that could host West End productions in the borough.
The plan, linked to the long-running success of the Ealing Summer Festivals, would place the venue in a temporary structure for three years before removing it and restoring the parkland. If approved, Troubadour Theatres Limited would fund, operate and manage the theatre, which already runs venues in Canary Wharf and Wembley Park and has another planned for Greenwich.
The council says the scheme could help bring more visitors to West Ealing and Ealing Broadway, support local cafes, shops and restaurants, and create jobs. Council leader Peter Mason said the proposal could deliver world-class performing arts, revive the high street and make live entertainment more affordable and accessible for residents. He stressed that the venue would be temporary and that the project could also test whether Ealing could support a permanent theatre in the future.
The proposal includes a box office, foyer, bar and a heated, air-conditioned auditorium. If cabinet backs the lease, work could begin in the new year, and the theatre could open by next Easter.
Residents and businesses would then have further chances to comment through a formal consultation and the planning process.
Troubadour Theatres and the council also plan engagement events in the autumn, with councillor Lauren Wall encouraging people to take part and share their views.
