Film director Stanley Kubrick’s former Hertfordshire home is up for sale with Savills.

Abbots Mead in Barnet Lane, Elstree is listed for sale with a guide price of £6,950,000.

The nine-bedroom home from where he managed the production of iconic works including 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining, was the New York-born director’s house from 1965 – 1979.

Property agent Steven Spencer, head of office at Savills Rickmansworth, said: “We’re very fortunate to have the privilege of selling many great houses that have a rich and varied history. However it’s rare for somewhere to have such a direct link to filmmaking unless it’s been used as a location for shoots.

“The close proximity to Elstree Studios made it the perfect base for Kubrick and his family, but he also worked a lot from home – carefully managing all aspects of four films from his extraordinary body of work from within its four walls.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to own a true piece of filmmaking history that helped shape some of the most iconic films in cinema.”

Set in a little over two acres of grounds and accessed through large wrought iron gates, Abbots Mead has a blue plaque to commemorate Kubrick’s time at the house.

The nine-bedroom property has been extended and modified over the years and now offers in excess of 7,700 sq ft of accommodation arranged over three floors.

Period features of note include ornate cornices, high skirtings, original doors and impressive fireplaces, while large windows and high ceilings ensure plenty of light.

The ground floor includes a main drawing room with open fireplace and carved marble surround, wooden floors and double doors to both a conservatory and study. A dining room has an ornate fireplace, bay window and French doors to a garden terrace, while a family room also opens to the terrace and has a large carved fireplace with overmantle mirror.

A large farmhouse style kitchen with pine floor units, open shelving and built-in appliances completes the ground floor.

An impressive ornate staircase leads to the first floor, where the principal bedroom suite features a large fireplace, bay window overlooking the garden, dressing room with a range of built-in wardrobes and spacious bathroom. There are also three other bedrooms, two bathrooms and a separate office/studio.

On the second floor is a large landing and five further bedrooms.

The rear garden has well stocked borders, a wisteria covered pergola, gazebo, sheltered terrace and central paved area. There is also a heated swimming pool, pool house with sauna, two greenhouses, workshop, various outbuildings and an orchard.

Sitting alongside a double garage, a separate single garage has a two-bedroom apartment on its first floor, while the property also includes Abbots Mead Lodge – a 3,200 sq ft detached four-bedroom house with its own private garden.

Steven continued: “Quite apart from its history, Abbots Mead is a handsome period house in its own right – enjoying a secluded position in a highly regarded road, adjoining open countryside and mature woodland.

“Well-proportioned rooms provide generous family space with a sense of grandeur, while mature trees at the garden boundaries ensure plenty of privacy and are the perfect backdrop to a beautiful setting.

“The property’s proximity to Elstree and Borehamwood station with its regular train services into London King’s Cross mean that it’s well-connected for those who need to travel into the city, while there are also several notable schools nearby and the A1, M1 and M25 are all within a short drive.”
