In a large expansion of its brewing operations, Greene King has confirmed the acquisition of a 7.73-acre site at Suffolk Park for the construction of its new brewery.

This development follows the UK’s leading pub company and brewer’s lease of a 161,344 sq ft warehouse at the same location last Autumn from property developer Jaynic.

The £40 million investment will bolster Greene King’s longstanding presence in Bury St Edmunds, a town synonymous with the brewer’s 200-year history. The new facility is designed to enhance production capabilities, focusing on both traditional cask ales and modern premium craft beers.

Ben Oughton, development director at Jaynic, expressed his satisfaction with the deal. He said: “We are delighted to have concluded a site sale with Greene King for its new brewing operations at Suffolk Park to sit alongside the company’s new distribution warehouse.

“Suffolk Park has been a huge success for Jaynic having exceeded our expectations. It leaves us with a final plot of just 5.3 acres where a reserved matters planning consent has been granted for a 77,000 sq ft logistics building. After this final phase Jaynic will have delivered a total of around 2m sq ft on the park.”

The brewery is part of Greene King’s broader transformation strategy aimed at modernising its operations to meet evolving customer demands. Significant environmental advancements are also planned, with the new brewery expected to cut water use by over 50 per cent per pint and make major strides in energy efficiency.

Nick Mackenzie, chief executive at Greene King, highlighted the importance of the new brewery.

He said: “Brewing in Bury St Edmunds is a core part of Greene King’s DNA. This investment not only reaffirms our commitment to our brewing heritage in this historic town but also secures our future capabilities to produce beloved brands sustainably.”
