Guildford local plan consultation opens

Guildford Borough Council has launched a scoping consultation for its new Local Plan, which will guide development and land use across the borough through 2045.

The plan will shape where homes, jobs, services and infrastructure are provided, while also protecting and enhancing the area’s environment, heritage and distinctive character.

This consultation is the first of at least three chances for local people to help shape the plan. Residents, businesses, community groups and other stakeholders are being asked for their views on the key issues, challenges and opportunities the borough faces, as well as the policy topics the new plan should include and how the Council should engage with people during the process.

The new Guildford Local Plan will play a vital role in shaping the future of our borough. Cllr Fiona White, lead councillor for planning, said the Council wants to hear from as many people as possible and that public input will help identify the right priorities and ensure the plan reflects community needs and aspirations. She encouraged everyone interested in Guildford to get involved from the outset.

The Council is currently in the preparatory “getting ready” stage under the Government’s revised planning system, before the formal 30-month plan-making process begins at the end of October. The consultation will run from Wednesday 2 September to Wednesday 14 October.

Before adoption, a Government-appointed Planning Inspector will independently examine the new Local Plan. Once approved, it will replace the Council’s existing Local Plan documents, including the Local Plan: Strategy and Sites (2019) and Local Plan: Development Management Policies (2023).
