Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has allocated £3.9 million to develop a new Town Park at Tanyard Meadows in north east Horley.

This initiative aims to enhance sport and play provisions, addressing the needs of the growing population. The funding comes from developer contributions linked to new developments in the area.

The park will offer diverse facilities, including play areas for various age groups, grass sports pitches for junior football and cricket, an outdoor gym or trim trail, an improved multi-use games area, and courts for tennis or pickleball. Additional features include a sports pavilion with toilets and changing rooms, youth facilities like a skate park or parkour area, and a network of footpaths for walking, running, and cycling.

The park’s design will also focus on enhancing the Burstow Stream environment to balance recreation and nature conservation, improving biodiversity.

Tanyard Meadows was chosen for its size, accessibility, and existing ownership by the Borough Council. Cllr Fairhurst highlighted the significant growth in Horley, with 2,600 new homes and infrastructure improvements over the past two decades.

The park aims to address the shortfall in outdoor facilities in the borough’s south, providing modern, inclusive, and sustainable spaces for community engagement.

The Council plans to appoint a design team and contractor for the project, funded entirely by Section 106 developer contributions. Long-term maintenance funding is secured, and collaboration with stakeholders like Horley Town Council will enhance other town open spaces. Community feedback has been integral to the park’s planning process.
