Kingston Council plans to submit a planning application to update the Kingston Cycle Hub in the town centre, aiming to make it a more useful community asset.

The ground floor, currently occupied by Kingston Hive, would stay as a community space. The first floor would be converted into a secure, subscription-based cycle storage facility operated by a London-wide operator, giving cyclists more confidence when leaving their bikes in the borough. The top floor would be repurposed into a recreation and wellbeing facility delivered by a not-for-profit provider.

The changes respond to shifts in commuter behaviour and reports of antisocial behaviour in the building. If approved, the scheme would broaden the hub’s role beyond cycle parking and support both everyday travel and local wellbeing.

The building opened in 2021 and was funded by Transport for London and the Mayor of London. It was originally created to encourage active travel and strengthen cycling provision in Kingston. Alongside the hub, wider improvements to Kingston’s transport and public realm have also been completed, including upgrades at Kingston Bridge, better pedestrian and cycle facilities at Horse Fair and Clarence Street, new crossings on Richmond Road, and the Kingston Station cycle hub and Riverlink pedestrian and cycle bridge.
