New plans are set to be submitted next month for a partial redevelopment of the former Drews the Ironmongers store in Caversham Road, Reading.

S2 Estates’ plans to demolish the vacant building, originally a brewery and malthouse, for a scheme of 44 flats were thrown out by Reading Borough Council in October 2020. A subsequent appeal was refused by the Planning Inspectorate in May 2021.

Genius1 Group marketed the 10,875 sq ft space but no tenant was  found.

Now S2 Estates has told Thames Tap it is working on new plans which it hopes to submit to Reading Borough Council in June.

Director Sam Berg said: “We are working with the council and the heritage department to come up with a scheme that retains the historic fabric of the existing building whilst allowing a redevelopment of the site to be facilitated.”

The site is close to a new letting to leisure operator Bowl Central.
