A new consultation has begun on redeveloping a housing estate in Grays.
Thurrock Council is consulting on revised proposals to redevelop the Blackshots Estate in order to avoid building unpopular plans to build on nearby King George Playing Field. The council has been working with Avison Young on its proposals.
Under previous plans the three tower blocks – Keir Hardie House, Bevan House and Morrison House – were to be demolished and replaced with 258 new, modern and energy efficient homes in a series of medium-rise blocks of flats, along with houses.
However, that scheme meant a swathe of King George Playing Fields would be redeveloped as part of the new estate. The new proposals mean the new homes could potentially be delivered by building on Chapel Farm instead.
Cllr Lee Watson, cabinet member for good growth, said: “While we want to deliver high quality modern homes for Blackshots we also want to make sure that views of local residents are taken into account.
“We know that the previous proposals, which would have meant the loss of some of King George Playing Field, were not well liked locally. That is why I am delighted that we are able to put forward these new proposals which leave the playing fields untouched.”
A public engagement event has been held and a wider consultation is now imminent.
