Planning application for Bristol Airport expansion submitted

Last week, a hybrid planning application for the expansion of Bristol Airport was submitted to Bristol City Council.

The proposal was validated, with a consultation now being the next stage of the process.

The expansion would aim to enable a throughput of 15 million passengers annually, up from the current approximation of 10.8 million.

Core expansion features

The application aims to achieve the increase in throughput with the following features:

  • Extension of the western apron to accommodate additional aircraft stands
  • Construction of a new car park for around 2,000 vehicles
  • A170-metre extension of the eastern runway
  • The expansion of the existing Silver Zone car park to provide roughly 1,720 additional vehicles
  • Construction of a new roundabout on the A38, and widening of the road to accommodate an additional bus lane

Additional features

The outline application also seeks permission for construction of other features, such as extensions to terminal buildings, as well as underground walkways to connect them.

Proposal reactions

In a recent YouGov poll, 44 per cent of participants backed the proposal to increase throughput, whilst 24 per cent opposed it.
