Wandsworth Planning Committee has approved a new nursery and pocket park at 76 Swaffield Road, SW18 3TJ.

This development promises to transform the existing green space within the Brocklebank Estate into a vibrant community hub accessible to all residents.

The pocket park will feature various amenities designed to cater to both children and adults. Plans include play areas, a new path, sustainable planting, benches, and bins. The park’s boundary will be modified to enhance visibility, and secure entrances will feature self-closing gates to ensure safety. Access for surrounding homes will remain secure.

Three design options for the park are available for public consultation, allowing residents to have a say in the final look and feel of the space. Cabinet member for Environment, Judi Gasser, emphasised the importance of community input, stating, “We aim to create a place where children can play and people can relax, but we want to ensure a new park reflects the needs of local people.”

The project involves demolishing a redundant single-storey nursery building and constructing the new park. The boundary walls along Swaffield Road, Whitehead Close, and the passageway to Kingham Close will be adjusted in height, with new railings and brick piers enhancing the park’s aesthetic and security. Existing walls will be painted or restored to their natural brickwork.

Key features of the park include a Play Tower with various play elements, a spinning carousel, and a raised planting area with timber seating. Additional amenities include benches, cycle racks, a sealed gravel footpath, and bollard lighting. Signage will provide information on park hours and contact details.

The planting scheme will incorporate shade-tolerant shrubs and sensory plants, creating a lush and engaging environment for visitors. This development marks a significant step in enhancing community spaces in Wandsworth, offering a new venue for relaxation and recreation.
