Wandsworth Council’s planning committee has approved the demolition of a long-derelict building at the entrance to Roehampton’s Alton estate to pave the way for new affordable homes and community facilities.
The site, known as ‘Block A’ on Danebury Avenue and Holybourne Avenue, was formerly a Co-op building with residential spaces, offices, and a youth club. The redevelopment will transform the area into a community complex featuring a new library, GP practice, council offices, youth space, and 55 affordable, family-sized council homes.
This development is a significant step in the Alton Renewal Plan, which aims to enhance community facilities and public spaces while providing genuinely affordable homes.
Aydin Dikerdem, cabinet member for housing, emphasised the importance of this transformation for local residents, highlighting the new library, youth facilities, GP practice, and green spaces.
The new community hub will be a four-storey building on Danebury Avenue, offering flexible spaces, youth facilities, council services, and a community hall. The 55 new council homes will be in a separate nine-storey building, designed to meet modern space and accessibility standards.
Public realm improvements will include more trees, a new play space, and safer routes along Danebury Avenue and Holybourne Avenue.
In response to residents’ requests, the council is also installing wayfinding signage, new artwork, and creative lighting around the estate. New play spaces at Alton Activity Centre and Downshire Field, designed with input from local children, will open by summer, featuring zoned areas for different age groups and natural play features.
Focus Hall has reopened after refurbishment, providing a safer community space for local activities and events.
The Alton Renewal Plan includes estate-wide improvements, aiming to deliver up to 650 new homes, enhanced facilities, and better routes around the estate.
