Councillors have approved plans for 40 flats close to Reading town centre.

Elstree Land Ltd & Swaythling Housing Society won a unanimous vote to redevelop the Avis Car Hire site on the corner of Caversham Road and Great Knollys Street, at Reading Borough Council’s planning applications committee meeting on December 2.

Lead councillor for strategic environment, planning & transport, Cllr Tony Page said: “It’s worth reminding colleagues that this site has long been an unattractive, almost eyesore, on the corner of Great Knollys Street and Caversham Road.

“It was tidied up relatively recently when the car hire business was established there nearly 30 years ago and before that it was even worse so this represents a major improvement in terms of the usage of that site and the designs, I think, is an improvement to those that were initially trailed at the pre-app discussions last year.”

Councillors asked for a condition that appropriate materials are used to suit nearby buildings.
