Hotly-disputed plans for an industrial development to replace the art deco former Adwest building in Woodley are to go before councillors a second time – with another recommendation for approval.

Goya developments’ plans were deferred at a meeting of Wokingham borough’s planning committee on May 11 after a motion, proposed by Cllr Gary Cowan, to ‘understand the context better and visit the site’ was approved.

The plans had been recommended for approval by officers. Now the plans, along with a technical amendment to one of the conditions, will go back to the committee on June 10, recommended for approval once more.

A 4,551-name petition opposing the development and seeking to keep the Headley Road East building, which was designed by Guy Morgan & Partners and was originally used for Miles Aircraft production, was discussed at the May 11 meeting but officers argued that the developer is likely to appeal in the case of a refusal by the council.

The building is the last intact remnant of the former Woodley Aerodrome. Historic England (HE) refused an attempt to have the building given listed status. HE said too little of the original fabric of the building remained since it had been altered over the years.
