Vistry Homes’ plans for 170 properties in the north of Banbury have been unanimously refused by Cherwell District Council.
The council’s planning committee followed the officers’ recommendation to refuse the scheme of one to four-bedroom homes at its August 10 meeting.
The developer, represented by Turley, wanted to build on a 12.63-hectare site east of Warwick Road, which is made up of two arable fields.
But it was refused on the basis of it being outside of the settlement area, its harm to the open countryside and heritage setting of the conservation area in nearby Hanwell. An amended reason for refusal was lack of satisfactory legal agreement.
Speaking against the plan, Chris Brant from Keep Hanwell Village Rural, told the committee: “This proposal is totally inappropriate land use. We have already seen the majority of Banbury’s new homes since 2011, built to the north of the town.
“The limit of what has been successful, has been reached.”
Also refused at the meeting was a Gladman Developments plan for 60 homes on a 4.4-hectare site north west of Quarry Close,Bloxham.
