Hammersmith & Fulham Council, in collaboration with partners, has invested over £1.3 million to modernise the sports facilities at Linford Christie Outdoor Sports Centre in Wormwood Scrubs.

This investment was supported by the Wormwood Scrubs Charitable Trust and Kensington Dragons FC. The upgrades include two new seven-a-side pitches, three courts for tennis or netball, and improved floodlighting. Additionally, the old changing rooms were demolished and replaced. These enhancements aim to make the facilities more welcoming, safe, and accessible for people of all ages and abilities, contributing to a stronger, safer, and kinder borough.

The new facilities complement the recently built community room and existing pitches, which can be divided into smaller playing areas. The improvements are expected to benefit Dragons FC, which leases the main 11-a-side pitch, and local primary-age pupils who use the facilities.

The stadium, located north of Du Cane Road in White City, will now be able to host more school tournaments, Disabled sports events, and free summer school sessions for boys and girls.

The lease with Dragons FC includes clauses to encourage community involvement and to ensure affordable pitch-hire rates.

Osama El-Amin, manager of the Wormwood Scrubs Charitable Trust, emphasised the Trust’s commitment to maintaining this valued space and highlighted the importance of community partnerships with Dragons FC, Thames Valley Harriers, and the Friends of Wormwood Scrubs. The Trust also invested £60,000 in resurfacing the multi-use games area behind the Old Oak Family Hub, addressing safety concerns by clearing vegetation and laying a new all-weather surface with improved floodlighting.

Future plans include resurfacing the stadium’s eight-lane running track and further enhancing the facilities. These efforts underscore the commitment to providing quality sports and leisure opportunities for the local community while preserving the ecological richness of Wormwood Scrubs.
