Bromley has approved the redevelopment of Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, clearing the way for a major transformation of one of London’s most important sporting landmarks.
The £100m+ scheme will modernise the 1964 venue while protecting its historic character, with work expected to begin in late 2026. The plans aim to create a more accessible, inclusive and sustainable centre for community sport and elite competition.
Key improvements include the return of the 50m swimming pool and diving pool to the aquatics hall, a larger gym, a new indoor 100m track, climbing and weightlifting facilities, outdoor padel courts, five-a-side pitches, a multi-sports pitch, and a new public community space with a café, running track and outdoor gym. Accessibility upgrades will include improved lighting, better wayfinding, and a step-free route across the park. The project also targets a 98 per cent reduction in carbon emissions through fabric upgrades, solar PV, and air-source heat pumps.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said, “I’m delighted that planning approval has been granted for this once-in-a-generation redevelopment of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.”
The redevelopment has strong backing from sports bodies, local leaders and community partners, and is expected to bring long-term benefits for South London.
