Work has begun on the first major block in Roehampton’s Alton Estate regeneration.

Wandsworth Council says the long-derelict Block A at the estate entrance is being prepared for demolition later in the autumn, to make way for new homes and community facilities.

The move follows earlier improvements at Downshire Field, where new play areas and public spaces were added, and at the Alton Activity Centre, which now includes upgraded play areas and a youth zone. The council points to last year’s resident ballot, in which an overwhelming majority backed proposals for new homes, community spaces and public realm improvements.

Housing cabinet member Matthew Corner said the authority remains strongly committed to delivering better housing and making the estate a place that offers greater opportunities for families and children. He described the start of work at Block A as a major milestone and said the council wants to attract investment and continue shaping future phases with local residents.

Further consultation and progress updates are planned as the wider masterplan moves forward. More information is available on the council’s Alton Regeneration website. The project aims to support a long-term renewal of the estate while balancing housing delivery, community needs, and resident involvement carefully.
