The Brookmead Trust has secured approval for a residential scheme at land at the rear of The Harrow Inn, The Street, Compton, Guildford, comprising ten new homes, including six affordable dwellings.
The proposal occupies former car parking and beer garden land to the rear of the public house, within a predominantly residential setting, but the site also lies in the Green Belt and Surrey Hills National Landscape. Nearby heritage assets include the locally listed Harrow Inn and village hall, as well as a Grade II listed building to the west.
The scheme comprises three main buildings: two semi-detached market homes and a two-storey affordable block containing a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments. The design includes amenity space, car parking, landscaping, and a barn-hipped roof form for the affordable block. Building heights are limited, with the affordable block reaching 8.8 metres, and separation distances have been set to reduce impact on neighbours and the village hall.
The application was supported by technical documents covering design, energy, trees, transport, viability, ecology, flood risk, and biodiversity.
Approval reflects the council’s acceptance that the development can provide the needed housing, including affordable units, while maintaining an appropriate relationship with surrounding properties and the area’s character
