Waverley Borough Council is considering a proposal to buy 20.9 acres of land off Hale Road in Farnham from the Ismaili Trust and turn it into a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG).
The site, beside Farnham Park, would extend existing green space, improve biodiversity, and add parking for visitors to Farnham Park and St John’s Church.
SANGs are designed to give residents attractive places to walk, exercise, and enjoy nature, while reducing pressure on protected habitats such as the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area.
The proposed site could also support housing delivery in the Farnham area by providing environmental mitigation for around 439 to 532 new homes, including affordable homes.
Councillor Mark Merryweather said the project would create a valuable natural space for local people, help protect important wildlife habitats, and support much-needed housing development. He thanked the Ismaili Trust for working constructively with the council during what he described as a complex process.
President Naushad Jivraj of the Ismaili National Council said the trust was pleased to help make the opportunity possible and welcomed the fact that the land would continue to benefit the community, protect wildlife, and provide parking for St John’s Church.
If approved, the land will be managed under a long-term plan in line with Natural England guidance. Developer contributions will fund the project’s creation, management, and maintenance. The proposal will go before the council’s Executive on 1 September, and consent from the West Surrey Shadow Authority will also be needed.
