Southend-on-Sea City Council’s Cabinet has approved the appointment of the main contractor for the Leigh Port Regeneration Project.
The £21.8 million project will modernise port infrastructure, helping to secure the long-term future of Leigh’s fishing and cockling industry while protecting the area’s unique maritime heritage.
Construction is expected to begin in October 2026 and be completed by June 2028.
Improvements will include quay upgrades, piling, dredging and other essential infrastructure works to create a safer, more sustainable working port for the future.
The scheme is funded through £14.9mn from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, alongside £6.9mn from the council.
Planning permission for the scheme was granted in July 2026, and preparatory design and engineering work has already been completed.
The project team will continue working with port users, local businesses, residents and partners throughout construction to minimise disruption and keep stakeholders informed.
