In a significant development for Roehampton’s Alton estate, residents have overwhelmingly supported Wandsworth Council’s regeneration plans in a historic ballot.
Over 1,400 residents participated, with 82.4 per cent voting ‘yes’ to proposals for up to 650 new homes, a new library, GP surgeries, youth facilities, a Family Hub, improved shops, green spaces, and better access around the estate. The ballot, run independently by Civica Election Services, saw a 41.5 per cent turnout among the 3,395 eligible voters.
Aydin Dikerdem, Wandsworth Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, hailed the result as a pivotal moment for the Alton estate, which has long suffered from underinvestment. The council is committed to delivering affordable homes and enhanced community facilities, with plans to prioritise family-sized homes for residents facing overcrowding.
The regeneration scheme aims to achieve over 50 per cent affordable housing, supported by a grant from the Greater London Authority. The Alton Renewal Plan has already initiated improvements, including the opening of the Roehampton Family Hub, community events, and infrastructure upgrades.
Local MP Fleur Anderson expressed enthusiasm for the investment, highlighting the community’s desire for change and modern amenities. The new plan replaces a previous master plan scrapped in 2022 due to insufficient affordable housing. It will see 167 homes replaced with 614 new ones, over half of which will be affordable. The council will now proceed with detailed planning, aiming to submit a planning application next year, marking a transformative step for one of the UK’s largest council estates.
