A regeneration plan has been approved for a neglected Art Deco building in Swindon town centre.
Innovate Associates’ application on behalf of RN Real Estate has been given consent by Swindon Borough Council to regenerate 24-25 Bridge Street in a delegated decision.
The developer plans three retail units on the ground floor (totalling 245 sq m) and eight flats on the two floors above of the 1931 building, which was initially a Burton menswear store but had been converted into various drinking establishments in more recent years.
Two one-bedroom and six two-bedroom flats are proposed in the scheme, which was drawn up by Vaughan Architects.
The building not listed, is not in a conservation area and has no other heritage protection.
A council report by officers states: “The application site is located in a highly accessible location within Swindon town centre where the development plan supports and encourages retail development at ground floor, with residential development above.
“The proposal would positively contribute to town centre regeneration and would return the vacant unit back into active use.
“The development would be provided in a manner that would not give rise to adverse visual harm and subject to condition (to secure acceptable internal noise levels), occupants would be afforded sufficient amenity.
“This is afforded great weight in the planning balance.”
