Plans to build a care home and 85 flats on the site of Basingstoke Town’s former ground have been thrown out.

Despite a recommendation for approval, the plans by Basron to develop the vacant site of the Camrose Stadium were rejected by Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council’s development control committee on the grounds that the benefits did not outweigh the harm in losing the football ground.

More than 2,500 people had signed petitions against the scheme and 66 wrote letters to oppose it.

Work is under way at existing sports fields at Winklebury to create a new ground for the club.

Basron is considering whether to appeal.
