The Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP made three key announcements yesterday, at the “Creating a scientific superpower” conference in Westminster.
Reeves opened her speech by describing the Governments role as: “Back your ambition, and helping it scale”, as the Oxford Cambridge growth corridor was: “At the centre of our plans”.
Reeves then continued by mentioning the existing success of the region, noting: “Over 400 university spinouts have originated from Oxford and Cambridge between 2011 and 2025”, as well as citing some of the most successful companies based in the region, including Arm, Oxford Nanopore, CMR Surgical, and Aiimi.
Three core announcements were made regarding the Governments intentions for the Oxford Cambridge growth corridor:
- The establishment of a Greater Cambridge Development Corporation for Greater Cambridge (as mentioned at the conference earlier by Matt Pennycook MP)
- The acquisition of the Cambridge East site by Homes England, in partnership with the Hill Group
- Funding for a new Eastern entrance at Bletchley train station, supporting the existing council funding announced earlier this year
Reeves concluded her speech by saying: “If we get this right, working together, this corridor will not just compete globally, it will lead globally”.
