A series of upgrades to student accommodation at Green Templeton College has been approved by Oxford City Council.

Growing numbers at the Woodstock Road college prompted its application which was approved by the council’s planning committee on January 23.

It will mean the demolition of squash courts, gardener’s shed, porter’s lodge, existing student accommodation, glasshouse and a structure known as the Doll building.

New structures include three buildings with a total 51 student study bedrooms, communal spaces and landscaping. There will be a new porter’s lodge with offices, study space and a new dining hall.

The changes mean the striking Radcliffe Observatory will be brought back into use as study space, including a library.

The masterplan for the approved scheme, which will be built to Passivhaus Standards, has been designed to integrate with the college’s Radcliffe Observatory conservation and decarbonisation project which the college is in the process of launching to coincide with the recent 250th anniversary of the first astronomical observations at the building.
