Crawley Borough Council has initiated the first phase of the Station Gateway regeneration scheme, with preparatory works already underway.
This phase, managed by Landbuild Ltd, focuses on transforming public spaces in key areas, including the Martlets, Haslett Avenue West, and Friary Way, alongside significant improvements to the bus station in Crawley town centre. The construction is expected to last approximately 5 months, aiming to enhance overall operations and accessibility in the area.
The initial construction efforts will concentrate on highway improvements along Station Way and its junction with Friary Way. This includes upgrading pedestrian routes, improving traffic flow, and enhancing public spaces. To ensure safety and efficiency, lane closures and occasional full road closures will be implemented, with clearly marked diversion routes to minimise disruption. Access for residents and local businesses will be maintained throughout the construction period.
This £7.4 million regeneration project, funded by government and local authority capital from the Crawley Growth Programme and Towns Fund, commenced on-site in November 2025, with completion expected in 2027. The project aims to deliver numerous benefits to the town centre, including improved connectivity and transport infrastructure. It will create a better-connected transport hub for pedestrians and cyclists, linking the railway station, bus station, and the wider town centre.
The enhanced bus station will feature improved bus and traffic flows around Friary Way, maximising operational capacity and boosting bus service provision across the town. The project also focuses on creating high-quality, distinctive public spaces to increase footfall and vitality in the town centre, fostering a stronger sense of place. High-quality soft landscaping, including a variety of plantings and greenery, will enhance the area’s environmental quality.
Additionally, the scheme will provide continuous and safe cycle infrastructure, extending the wider cycle network to the edge of the pedestrian shopping area. The area will be made accessible to all users, including children, older people, and people with disabilities. The transformation aims to improve the living and working environment, encouraging private sector investment and development, including new residential and commercial spaces.
