Contracts have been signed to deliver a major phase in the regeneration of Harlow town centre.
Harlow Council has appointed The Hill Group as the lead contractor for the £34 million flagship regeneration scheme to regenerate the town’s Arts and Cultural Quarter in Playhouse Square.
It follows months of design, planning, and preparation – including the demolition of Occasio House. The project is backed by significant Government investment and is part of the council’s wider programme.
The scheme will deliver:
- A new live performance venue and exhibition spaces
- A new café/restaurant and booking office for the Playhouse
- A new music school and recording studios
- Modern studio spaces for both community and commercial use
- A new home for the Gibberd Gallery
- Improved public realm, including a vibrant public square and pocket park with an outdoor performance space
- Upgrades to the Haydens Road underpass
- 47 new affordable homes
The Playhouse Quarter is one phase of the complete rebuilding of the town centre. The transformation of Broad Walk is well under way and the Market Square and Bus Station will start imminently.
Cllr Dan Swords, leader of Harlow Council, said: “This is a proud moment for Harlow. Signing the contract means we’re not just talking about the rebuilding of the town centre – we’re delivering it.
“The Arts and Cultural Quarter will be the beating heart of our regenerated town centre – a vibrant hub of creativity and inspiration that celebrates Harlow’s heritage and future.
“It will build on the outstanding work of Harlow Playhouse and create something truly special for generations to come.
“This project is a shining example of how we are Building Harlow’s Future – creating a town centre that is thriving, creative, and full of opportunity. With work beginning this summer, we are no longer waiting but delivering on our promise.”
