Councillors in Surrey Heath have agreed to proceed with work to allow up to 550 homes in Camberley.

Surrey Heath Borough Council’s executive approved a proposal at its May 6 meeting to demolish vacant buildings at 125 – 137 London Road (A30), a former restaurant and a former Allders department store, to make the site more attractive to developers.

The site is allocated in the Local Plan for 550 homes and is supported by £1.48 million from the Government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund (BLRF).

The executive approved the commencement of works, including asbestos removal and demolition of derelict buildings to pave the way for the site’s future development.

Cllr Kel Finan-Cooke, portfolio holder property & economic development, told the meeting: “This council previously made a commitment to deliver the regeneration of the London Road site.

“Delivering this key site will transform Camberley by providing much-needed homes for Surrey Heath residents, but also by boosting retail, our night-time economy and the overall character and atmosphere of our town centre.

“As members know, our emerging Local Plan allocates 550 homes across the London Road block, going some way to meet our housing targets for the borough, so it is important to get moving on this site, which has for so long been wasted potential.

“We’ve now hit a new milestone with this site. With support from the BLRF grant of just over £1.4 million, we are now able to commence enabling works to the buildings at 125 – 137 London Road, the building formerly occupied by the Thai restaurant and the building once occupied by the Allders department store.

“Once this site is cleared it will be much more attractive to developers.”

The council has invited developers and investors to get in touch regarding opportunities at 125 – 137 London Road.
