Pharmaceutical company GSK has announced plans to close its Stevenage site, from which 1,000 staff will be relocated to a new R&D facility at Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
GSK held a presence in Stevenage for 50 years, but now intends for a phased movement over to Cambridge, with plans for closure of the Stevenage site in 2029.
The new 300,000 sq ft Cambridge site is currently under construction, and is being developed by Prologis (who have recently seen progress elsewhere with their bid for SEGRO). The facility will support research in focus areas such as vaccines and oncology.
Upgrades to existing R&D facilities in Ware, Hertfordshire will also take place, with some employees being relocated there to support development and manufacturing scale-up.
£400 million will be invested by the company over three years to support these decisions.
