Places for London gains change of use for Ranelagh Gardens

Hammersmith and Fulham have unanimously approved plans to restore five railway arches at Ranelagh Gardens, Putney, near London Victoria Station.

 The scheme covers arches 72–76 and includes new commercial frontages and rear facades, demolition of rear extensions at arches 75/76, new fencing for the yard fronting the Thames Path, improved lighting and wayfinding, and a change of use for the existing yard from car rental use to flexible Class E space.

Arches 72 and 73 will also be brought into Class E use for commercial, business and service activities. The project aims to transform the arches and surrounding outdoor areas into a more vibrant, community-focused destination. Planned public-realm improvements include active frontages onto the Thames Path, upgraded services, new planting, and removal of existing extensions to widen the pedestrian environment, making the site greener, safer, and more accessible.

The design has incorporated recommendations from Light Follows Behaviour to improve lighting and navigation, with a particular focus on safety for women and girls. The Place for London team thanked everyone involved in shaping the proposals and said they look forward to working with partners and the local community to deliver the project.
