Hillingdon Council, led by Cllr Ian Edwards, expressed deep disappointment at the government’s announcement on the expansion of Heathrow Airport.

Edwards emphasised that any expansion would have a devastating impact on residents and communities. He criticised the Transport Secretary’s approach, stating that the proposals cannot be trivialised or rushed without thorough scrutiny. Edwards highlighted the severe consequences, including the destruction of homes, schools, and businesses, as well as increased air and noise pollution affecting thousands more due to new flight paths.

Edwards pointed out that, despite the government’s claim to allow communities to voice their concerns, residents of Hillingdon have been expressing their opposition for 25 years and still feel ignored. The council remains committed to protecting its residents and intends to use all available means to prioritise their welfare.

The council’s response comes in the wake of the Transport Secretary’s launch of a review of the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS), which will guide future expansion considerations. The government aims to expedite the process, with a draft ANPS expected by summer 2026, to support infrastructure projects and economic growth. However, Edwards and the council are wary of the potential negative impacts on the community and environment.

Overall, Hillingdon Council’s response underscores a deep concern for its residents’ well-being and a call for a more comprehensive evaluation and greater community involvement in the decision-making process regarding Heathrow’s expansion. The council is determined to challenge the proposals and ensure that the voices of the affected communities are heard and considered in any future developments.
