Cheltenham’s Municipal Offices Transformed into a Luxury Spa Hotel

Cheltenham’s Municipal Offices could be converted into a 125-room luxury spa hotel. This Grade II* listed building, currently home to Cheltenham Borough Council, has been on the market since late last year.

Most importantly, on May 22, an “exclusivity agreement” commenced for a three-month period of due diligence. The council has described this process as a thorough marketing and bidding journey that will assess all proposals.

Proposed Transformation into a Luxury Hotel

The preferred bid outlines a plan to transform the Municipal Offices into a vibrant luxury brand hotel. This upscale establishment will feature 125 rooms along with spa facilities, and event, banqueting, and conference spaces. Moreover, it aims to serve as a destination for both local residents and visitors, offering a versatile space for business, culture, adventure, and relaxation.

The international team behind the proposal has a strong track record of delivering high-end hotels across Europe. Mario San Jacinto, who leads the team from Almiranta Capital Ltd, remarked:

“We have assembled a truly world-class delivery team, comprising a commanding combination of both local and international real estate experts.”

He emphasised the project’s ambition to transform the Municipal Offices, a recognised heritage landmark, into a prized asset for Cheltenham, known as the Festival Town. The team is dedicated to ensuring that the sale of the building will bring lasting benefits to the council and the community.

Economic and Civic Pride Boost

San Jacinto also acknowledged the importance of civic pride and economic benefits. He stated,

“What remains important in our proposal is the economic and civic pride boost that our scheme will offer to Cheltenham and the region.”

The goal is to create a bustling social and business hub that connects well with everything Cheltenham and the Cotswolds have to offer.

Council’s Support for the Project

Councillor Rowena Hay, the leader of Cheltenham Borough Council, expressed her enthusiasm about the proposal. She said,

“The proposals to transform the offices into a luxury hotel, I feel are incredibly positive for the town centre and county as a whole.”

Council leader Hay reinforced the council’s commitment to ensuring that the project aligns with their aspirations for economic, environmental, and cultural enhancement. She highlighted the importance of preserving the heritage of the building while breathing new life into it.

Future steps will involve securing planning permissions and completing the deal, with the potential buyers eager to engage with local, regional, national, and international stakeholders.
