The figure paid by Norwich City Council when it acquired Anglia Square has been revealed as £5.625 million.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted by Eastern Daily Press unearthed the sum which had previously been withheld for commercial reasons.

The newspaper discovered the £5.625m paid to previous owner Columbia Threadneedle was made up entirely of Homes England funding.

In total the authority was awarded £34m in Government cash to cover the acquisition and demolition.

Work is now imminent on a major mixed-use scheme including up to 1,100 new homes, plus office, retail and leisure space.

Until then, an 80-unit shipping container box park will operate, housing many of the existing traders.
